About Scale Here.
About Scale Here.
Scale Here is a national business media and editorial platform dedicated to uncovering and promoting Canada’s startup and scaleup economy. Through rigorous journalism, practical analysis, and regional insight, we examine how companies grow, why some scale while others stall, and how the people, institutions, markets, policies, and decisions around them shape the conditions for entrepreneurial success across Canada.
The organization was birthed out of conversations among members of the Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship’s Advisory Board at the Ivey Business School at Western. These conversations began with a clear concern: Canada has extraordinary entrepreneurial talent, strong institutions, and promising regional ecosystems, but the country still needs a more honest, practical, and nationally connected conversation about what it takes for companies to scale here.
Scale Here was created to help advance that conversation. Our work focuses on the realities of building and growing companies in Canada. We examine the founders, regions, policies, capital conditions, institutions, and cultural choices that shape whether Canadian businesses grow, stall, stay, or leave. We are interested not only in startup activity, but in the deeper question of what allows ambitious companies to become enduring contributors to Canada’s economy.
Scale Here sits at the intersection of entrepreneurship journalism, regional ecosystem analysis, public policy insight, and practical institutional accountability. We go beyond surface-level narratives by asking harder questions about how companies are built, what barriers they face, where ecosystems are working, where gaps remain, and what changes are needed from governments, investors, institutions, and other ecosystem actors.
Although Scale Here emerged from a Western and Ivey-connected network, it is not designed to be a university-focused publication. It is a national professional initiative serving founders, operators, investors, policymakers, and ecosystem builders across Canada. At the same time, Scale Here is powered in part by the next generation of Canadian entrepreneurial leaders. Students contribute research capacity, editorial energy, regional curiosity, and fresh perspective, while experienced entrepreneurs and industry leaders provide strategic guidance and practical judgment.
Our purpose as an organization is simple: to help Canada better understand the engines of its entrepreneurial economy, identify the patterns that produce growth, and challenge the country to create the conditions for more companies to scale, compete, and remain here.
Mission Statement
Scale Here exists to uncover what it truly takes to build Canada’s entrepreneurial economy, region by region and founder by founder. We examine the founders, operators, policies, capital conditions, and cultural choices that shape whether Canadian businesses grow, stall, stay, or leave. Our mission is to help Canada understand what it truly takes to build enduring companies here, and to challenge actors, to create the conditions for more of them to scale and succeed.
Vison Statement
Our vision is to become Canada’s trusted platform for journalism on building companies beyond the startup stage, regional ecosystem insight, and constructive national advocacy focused on the future of the country’s scale up economy. We envision a Canada where ambitious founders and operators can build world class companies without treating departure as the default path to growth, where entrepreneurial support is strengthened region by region, and where the people, institutions, markets, and policy choices shaping business growth are examined with the depth, honesty, and foresight they deserve.
Three Strategic Pillars
Pillar I
Entrepreneurial Success
in Canada
Real stories of Canadian companies that are building, scaling, pivoting, exiting, or navigating difficult growth decisions. Core question: What does it actually take to build and scale a company in Canada?
Pillar II
Policy, Regulation and
Structural Forces
Analysis of the public, institutional, capital, and regulatory conditions that shape entrepreneurial outcomes. Covers federal, provincial, and municipal policy, tax structures, capital access, talent pipelines, and regulatory barriers. Core question: What conditions help or hinder Canadian companies as they try to grow?
Pillar III
Actionable Proposals for Ecosystem Actors
Practical recommendations for governments, investors, universities, corporations, professional services firms, and regional institutions. Core question: What should the ecosystem do next?
Core Values.
Core Values.
Truth Over Hype.
We believe Canadian entrepreneurship needs fewer surface level celebrations and more honest analysis. Scale Here tells stories with discipline, context, and intellectual honesty, including the hard parts of building, scaling, pivoting, exiting, and failing.
Regional Insight.
We reject the idea that Canada’s entrepreneurial story can be told from only one or two major centres. Every region has its own operating reality, talent base, policy environment, capital conditions, and institutional strengths. Scale Here will treat those differences as central to the national story.
Builder Respect.
We write for people who are doing the work. Founders, operators, investors, policymakers, and ecosystem leaders deserve analysis that is useful, grounded, and clear. Our work helps serious people think better and act better.
Constructive Accountability.
We challenge weak structures, underperforming institutions, poor incentives, and policy choices that limit entrepreneurial growth. The aim is progress beyond simple criticism.
Ambition for Canada.
Scale Here begins from the belief that Canada can produce more globally competitive companies and keep more of them here. We push against small thinking, comfortable narratives, and the quiet acceptance of losing talent, capital, and companies to other markets.
Next Generation Stewardship.
Scale Here is powered in part by emerging entrepreneurial leaders who are not only reporting on the future of Canada’s innovation economy, but learning how to shape it with intentionality, curiosity, and responsibility.
