Canada is a country with extraordinary entrepreneurial capacity. Across its regions, founders and operators are building companies in technology, manufacturing, food, health, energy, finance, logistics, consumer goods, professional services, and the many other sectors that shape the country’s economic life. These companies are not abstract symbols of innovation. They are employers, exporters, community anchors, productivity drivers, talent magnets, and future institutions in the making.
Yet the national conversation around entrepreneurship has not fully reflected the economic weight of the companies being built across this country. There is significant attention given to innovation, startup activity, funding announcements, ecosystem momentum, and founder ambition. What too often remains at the margins is the more consequential conversation about scale: the conditions that determine whether a company can grow beyond its early promise, compete internationally, retain ownership, access the right capital, hire the right talent, expand across markets, and remain rooted in Canada.
Scale Here was created to give that conversation a platform and bring greater visibility to Canada’s scale up economy.
The central question behind this platform is: what does it truly take to build and scale enduring companies in Canada? This question is economic, cultural, regional, and institutional. It reaches beyond the story of any single founder. It asks whether Canada is creating the conditions for ambitious companies to grow here with confidence, whether regional ecosystems are being properly developed, whether policy and capital structures are aligned with the realities of company building, and whether the country has the cultural conviction to support entrepreneurship as a central driver of national growth.
The name Scale Here carries that belief. It is both a statement and a challenge. Canadian companies should be able to scale here, and founders should be able to build world class businesses from here. Regions across the country should be able to cultivate entrepreneurial strength from within their own ecosystems, while institutions, investors, governments, universities, corporations, and service providers must understand their role in helping more companies move from promise to performance. Scale Here exists to help Canada understand the engines of its entrepreneurial economy more clearly, identify the patterns that produce growth, and support a future where more Canadian companies can build, compete, scale, and remain here.
This platform begins from the conviction that Canada’s entrepreneurial future will be built region by region and founder by founder. The broader economy is shaped through local realities. The experience of building in London is not identical to building in Calgary, Halifax, Vancouver, Waterloo, Montreal, Saskatoon, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, or St. John’s. Each region has its own industrial base, policy environment, capital networks, talent pipelines, anchor institutions, and founder culture. Scale Here will study those differences because the country cannot strengthen what it does not properly understand.
The work ahead requires a more disciplined form of journalism. Scale Here will examine how companies are built, where growth breaks down, why some firms scale while others stall, and what patterns can be learned from companies that have successfully grown in Canada. We will cover founder journeys with respect, while also looking closely at the conditions around those journeys. We will pay attention to capital access, market expansion, regulatory friction, procurement, export pathways, talent, leadership, ownership, productivity, and the institutional choices that influence business outcomes.
Our aim is to make Canada’s scale up economy more visible, more understandable, and more actionable. Visibility matters because the country needs to see more of its builders. Understanding matters because celebration without insight does little to improve outcomes. Action matters because a stronger entrepreneurial culture requires more than admiration for founders. It requires better conditions, better decisions, and a better shared understanding of what produces durable growth. Scale Here will be editorial in form and ecosystem minded in purpose. The platform will publish stories, analysis, interviews, regional perspectives, and practical proposals. Its work will be guided by three priorities: telling the real stories of entrepreneurial success in Canada, examining the policy and structural forces that shape company growth, and advancing useful recommendations for the actors who influence the entrepreneurial environment.
That is central to the purpose of Scale Here. Canada needs a more confident, informed, and demanding entrepreneurial culture. It needs a culture that recognizes company building as a national priority. It needs a culture that studies success carefully, names barriers honestly, and treats solutions with urgency. It needs a culture that allows founders and operators to believe that building from Canada is not a compromise, but a serious and viable path to global relevance. Scale Here enters the conversation with humility about the trust that must be earned. Credibility will come through the quality of the work, the fairness of the analysis, the usefulness of the ideas, and the consistency of the platform over time. The responsibility is to be rigorous without being cynical, ambitious without being careless, and constructive without avoiding difficult truths.
